Biography: Born in Beijing in the People’s Republic of China, Zhang Ziyi joined the Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 11, and at 15 she entered China’s prestigious Central Academy of Drama.

At the age of 19, she was offered her first role in world renowned director Zhang Yimou’s The Road Home, which won the Silver Bear award in the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. Zhang further rose to fame due to her role in the phenomenally successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, for which she won the Independent Spirit’s Best Supporting Actress Award and the Toronto Film Critics’ Best Supporting Actress Award. She went on to make Hero which was a huge success in the English-speaking world and an Oscar and a Golden Globe contender. Her next film was the avant-garde drama Purple Butterfly which competed at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. She went back to the martial arts genre with House of Flying Daggers, which earned her a Best Actress nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

For her next drama 2046, directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring many of East Asia’s best-known actresses, Zhang won the Hong Kong Film Critics’ Best Actress Award and the Hong Kong Film Academy’s Best Actress Award.

Showing her whimsical musical tap-dancing side, Zhang starred in Princess Raccoon directed by 82-year-old Japanese legend Seijun Suzuki who was honored at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

She plays the leading role of Sayuri in the adaptation of the international bestseller Memoirs Of A Geisha, with her Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon co-star Michelle Yeoh, as well as Gong Li and Ken Watanabe. The movie was produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Rob Marshall, and released in December 2005. Zhang has received a Best Actress – Drama Golden Globe nomination for her role. Zhang has also been known to sing, and was featured on the House Of Flying Daggers Soundtrack with her own musical rendition of the ancient Chinese poem Jia Rén Qu (The Beauty Song). The song was also featured in a scene in the film.

On 27 June, 2005 it was announced that Zhang had accepted an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), placing her among the ranks of those able to vote on the Academy Awards. Her formal welcome to AMPAS occurred in Beverly Hills, California on 21 September of 2005.

Zhang has been taking English lessons. She stated in a 2003 interview that she had started them after she began receiving more and more fan mail from the United States. (One of the supplementary documentaries on the American Hero DVD features Zhang speaking in English, and her dialogue in Memoirs of a Geisha is almost entirely in English.)

As part of a self-taught crash course in the language prior to filming Geisha, Zhang listened to and repeated words and phrases she heard on television commercials and music CDs. One of the English-language recording artists she was listening to during this time was Eminem, which apparently led to some embarrassing moments for the actress: “I don’t always know what [Eminem] is talking about, so I write down the lyrics and repeat them. Later, I understood how rude they were.”

Biography: Winona Ryder has built up a reputation for being the actress to call on for difficult roles. Her ability to see beyond the surface and to create characters that others couldn’t was built through a life spent outside of the mainstream. Winona Laura Horowitz was born on October 29th, 1971 in Winona, Minnesota. She was named after the town she was born in by her hippy parents Cindy and Michael.

Her parents were more involved with political activism at the height of the hippy movement than they were with drugs. This is not to say that they were completely divorced from the hallucinogenic side of the life. Her godfather was Dr. Timothy Leary, the L.S.D. guru who was influential in the drug counter-culture. Her father worked intimately with Leary, and for a time he ran a bookstore called “Flashback Books.” They were more interested in protesting Agent Orange than in preaching the benefits of mind alteration, however. Winona grew up in this atmosphere, sometimes living on electricity-free compounds. When she was eight, her parents moved back to the city. During her first week at the new school, the tom-boyish waif was jumped by a group of boys who mistook her for a gay boy rather than a girl. This pummeling resulted in something good. After some time spent learning at home, she was enrolled in the prestigious American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. It was while performing onstage at the Conservatory that she was discovered. Winona auditioned for the role of John Voight’s daughter in Desert Bloom. She didn’t get the part, but she got representation in the form of Triad Artists after they saw her tape.

Triad soon lined her up for her first role in Lucas. Lucas wasn’t great but Winona’s solid performance provided her a springboard into further films. It was also at this point that Winona Horowitz became Winona Ryder for the first time. When asked how she would like her name to appear in the credits, she chose the name Ryder from Mitch Ryder, who was one of her father’s favorite musicians.

She followed Lucas with a string of decent but unmemorable movies. Then came her big break. She appeared in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. Her role as the black-clothed, angst-ridden teenager captured the attention of late-eighties audiences. A year later, she played a similar character in the dark high school comedy, Heathers.

The fact that she could bring these darkly witty characters to life so beautifully guaranteed that when Burton was casting for Edward Scissorhands, she would be the first considered. While her role was less angst-filled than previous outings, she did an admirable role in this one as well. Wearing a blond wig, she played the beauty opposite then-fiance Johnny Depp’s beast. This marked her last outing in the role of a teenager.

After a small role in the indy film Night of Earth, her next role would have been her biggest to date, as Michael Corleone’s daughter in Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather Part III. Unfortunately, she had to pull out at the last minute due to a respiratory infection brought on by exhaustion. Instead, the role was played by the totally-inadequate-for-the-task, Sophia Coppola.

However, Winona Ryder and Francis Ford Coppola would work together yet. When Ryder found the screenplay for an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, she approached Coppola and he signed on. The sexually and sensually charged adaptation provided Ryder with her first truly grown-up role. She followed Dracula with Age of Innocence, which garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Having made two costume dramas, she signed on for a third. Little Women had been one of Ryder’s favorite novels and her performance as Jo March resulted in another Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress.

Biography: Uma Karuna Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her eccentric, multi-cultural upbringing (her mother Nena is a former psychotherapist while her father Robert A.F. Thurman is a Tibetan Buddhist monk, and a University of Columbia professor) could explain the unique names of the Thurman siblings, Dechen, Ganden and Mipam.

It is practically tradition in today’s beautiful actresses, but Uma (who was named after a Hindu deity and means “bestower of blessings”) did not fit in as a schoolgirl. As if her name wasn’t different enough, she was lanky and awkward as a child. Rather than the typically all-American extra-curricular activities such as cheerleading, Uma had better things to do: act.

After receiving a standing ovation while involved in an elementary school theatre production, Uma caught the acting bug and knew this was what she wanted to do with her life. So she packed up and like most aspiring models and actors, she headed for New York, not even sticking around long enough to become a high school graduate.

While in New York, Uma was forced to work odd jobs in order to pay the bills, such as being a dish washer and a model, a more glamorous day job. It didn’t take long for Uma to trade in her dishwashing gloves for scripts, as she finally landed her first feature film role.

After her role as a vampire in 1987′s Kiss Daddy Goodnight, Uma was cast in Johnny Be Good and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, which raised eyebrows and garnered her critical praise. But it was after her role in 1988′s Dangerous Liaisons that her image became even more erotic. Her role in 1990s Henry & June showcased Uma with sexuality streaming out of her pores, as she portrayed a bisexual in the film.

Although she starred in films such as Final Analysis, Jennifer 8, Mad Dog and Glory, and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, it was her role as the offbeat, cocaine-junkie Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction that garnered Uma an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting actress. With a departure from alternative, more dramatic films, to the commercial comedies Beautiful Girls and The Truth Behind Cats and Dogs, Uma proved that she can also provide some laughs.

Next up for the beautiful actress were roles in the sci-fi Gattaca; Batman & Robin as Poison Ivy; the film adaptation of Les Miserables; and her starring role as Emma Peel in the adaptation of The Avengers.

Uma went on a brief hiatus to marry Gattaca co-star Ethan Hawke and welcome their baby Maya Ray to the world. Uma was previously married to actor Gary Oldman, from 1990 to 1991, and her dating record includes Timothy Hutton and Robert De Niro.

After the birth of her first child in 1998, she took a rest from major roles to concentrate on motherhood. Her next roles were in low budget and television films, including Sweet and Lowdown, Tape, Vatel, and Hysterical Blindness. Thurman won a Golden Globe award for Hysterical Blindness, a film for which she also served as executive producer. In the film she played an excitable New Jersey woman in the 1980s searching for romance. The San Francisco Chronicle review wrote, “Thurman so commits herself to the role, eyes blazing and body akimbo, that you start to believe that such a creature could exist — an exquisite looking woman so spastic and needy that she repulses regular Joes. Thurman has bent the role to her will”.

After a five year hiatus from any major film roles, Thurman returned in 2003 in John Woo’s film Paycheck, and her next collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill. Paycheck was only moderately successful with critics and at the box office, but Kill Bill relaunched her career.

In Kill Bill she played one of the world’s top assassins, out on a revenge quest against her former lover. She was offered the role on her 30th birthday from Tarantino, who wrote the part specifically for her. He also cited Thurman as his muse while writing the film, and also gave her a formal joint credit for the character of Beatrix Kiddo, whom the two conceived on the set of Pulp Fiction from the sole image of a bride covered in blood.

Production was delayed for several months after Thurman became pregnant, and her part was considered for recasting, but Tarantino decided against recasting and delayed the film’s production. The film reportedly took nine months to shoot, and was filmed on location in five different countries. The role was also her most demanding to date, and she spent three months training in martial arts, swordsmanship, and Japanese language. The two-part action epic became an instant cult classic (although neither was a huge box office success) and scored highly with critics. The film series earned Thurman Golden Globe nominations for both entries, and three MTV Movie Awards for Best Female Performance and twice for Best Fight. Rolling Stone likened Thurman to “an avenging angel out of a 1940s Hollywood melodrama”.

The main inspirations for “The Bride” were several B-movie action heroines. Thurman’s main inspirations for the role were the title character of Coffy (played by Pam Grier) and the character of Gloria Swenson from Gloria (played by Gena Rowlands). She said that the two characters are “two of the only women I’ve ever seen be truly women [while] holding a weapon”. Coffy was screened for Thurman by Tarantino prior to beginning production on the film, to help her model the character.

By 2005, Thurman had become one of Hollywood’s highest paid actresses, commanding a salary of $12.5 million per film. Her first film of the year was Be Cool, the sequel to 1995’s Get Shorty, which reunited her with her Pulp Fiction castmate John Travolta. In the film she played the widow of a deceased music business executive. Later in 2005 she starred in the film Prime with Meryl Streep, playing a woman in her late thirties romancing a man in his early twenties. Thurman’s last film of the year was a remake of The Producers in which she played Ulla, a Swedish stage actress hoping to win a part in a new Broadway musical. Originally, the producers of the film planned to have another singer dub in Thurman’s musical numbers, but she was eager to do her own vocals. She is credited for her songs in the credits.

With a successful film career, Thurman once again became a desired model. Cosmetics company Lancôme selected her as a spokesmodel. The company named several lipstick shades after her, but they were only sold in Asia. In 2005, she became a spokeswoman for the French fashion house Louis Vuitton.

On February 7, 2006, Thurman was named as a knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France, an award for outstanding achievement in the field of art and literature.

Biography: Tea Leoni was born in New York City to Anthony Pantaleoni, a corporate lawyer, and Emily Patterson, a dietician. Biography: Tara Reid was born in Wyckoff, New Jersey, and is of Irish, English, Hungarian, French, and Italian descent. Reid began her career at the age of six in 1982 on the short-lived game show, Child’s Play. As a child, she had roles in a number of commercials for McDonald’s, Crayola, and Jell-O. She grew up in New York City, and attended the Professional Children’s School alongside such celebrities as Ben Taylor, Jerry O’Connell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Macaulay Culkin. On the night of November 4, 2004, Reid was embarrassed by a wardrobe malfunction at a highly publicized photo shoot at Puff Daddy’s 35th birthday party at Cipriani’s Restaurant in New York City, when her dress fell, exposing her left breast. Biography: Sienna Miller was born in New York City. Her father, Edward Miller, is an American banker; and her mother Jo Miller, is a South African who ran Lee Strasberg’s acting academy in London. Miller moved to England as a child and attended the Heathfield School in Ascot, Berkshire and later studied for a year at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York City. Culturally, she considers herself English.

For much of her childhood and adolescence, her stepmother was the English interior decorator Kelly Hoppen. She has one sister, Savannah; two half-brothers, Charles and Steven; and one former step-sister, Natasha (daughter of Kelly Hoppen).

Prior to her professional acting career, Miller worked as a photographic model. She currently models for Pepe Jeans, and she posed for Vanity Fair magazine’s 2006 Hollywood Issue topless and smoking a cigarette.

Miller’s relationship with Jude Law has frequently featured in the entertainment press. On Christmas Day of 2004, they became engaged. After college Sharon began a modeling career and was signed to represent Clairol, Diet Coke, and Revlon. Her pantieless leg-crossing scene brought Sharon much-needed notoriety, but has haunted her ever since.

In a more conventionally sympathetic role, Sharon followed up with another sizzling sex melodrama, Sliver (1993), which did middling business stateside but proved a solid success overseas. Trying to escape the sex-bomb trap, she begged for the frigid wife role in Intersection (1994), which met with limited success. She again flexed her international box-office clout paired with Sylvester Stallone in the explosive actioner The Specialist (1994) but fared much less well commercially with her next project, The Quick and the Dead (1995), which marked her producing debut. Sharon looked terrific in Western duds playing something of a distaff version of a Clint Eastwood-like gunfighter. Her directorial choice, Sam Raimi, helmed the smartly derivative tale with style to spare but the critical reception was uneven and the public stayed away. She rebounded with her widely acclaimed performance as Ginger, the Vegas hustler who wins the heart of Robert De Niro, in Martin Scorsese’s Casino (also 1995), a film that earned her a long sought-after Academy Award nomination.

The highly-paid, much-in-demand star (she has her own production company, Chaos, and has signed a first-look deal with Miramax) next filmed a remake of the Henri-Georges Clouzot’s noir classic Diabolique with Isabelle Adjani and Chazz Palmentieri and played a death-row inmate whose lawyer (Rob Morrow) works to save her from execution in Last Dance (both 1996).

Sharon, a diva who thoroughly enjoys her hard-won stardom, is a clever manipulator of her public image—on heavy press days, she reportedly changes outfits between each interview and photo session, a practice unheard of since the days of Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She lives, fittingly enough, in a gated French chateau in Beverly Hills.

Biography: Scarlett Johansson was born in New York City to Karsten Johansson, a Danish-immigrant, and Melanie Sloan, a Bronx-bred Jewish American. Her family has a history of involvement in theater and acting as her paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director, her older sister, Vanessa, and twin brother Hunter, are both American actors. She also has an older brother, Adrian, and a half-brother, Christian.

Johansson began her theater training by attending and graduating from Professional Children’s School in Manhattan in 2002, a school renowned for its theater and acting training to young, hopeful actors and actresses.

Johansson’s debuted in Hollywood and garnered praise and widespread attention with her role in The Horse Whisperer. Following the critical success of the 1998 picture, she followed with major roles as Rebecca in Ghost World, Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Griet in Girl with a Pearl Earring, Francesca in The Perfect Score and Nola in Match Point. Most of her performances received positive critical notice.

In 2003, she was nominated for two best actress awards at the Golden Globes, one for drama (Girl with a Pearl Earring) and one for comedy (Lost in Translation). She was also nominated for best actress for both films at the BAFTAs, and won best actress for Lost in Translation.

Scarlett was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in June 2004.In the same year, she starred in A Love Song for Bobby Long, a film that, despite being widely ignored by the movie-going public (grossing only $964,308 worldwide), earned Scarlett a third Golden Globe Award nomination.

Johansson was involved for a short time in the film Mission: Impossible III but did not officially join the cast because of scheduling conflicts, although a falling out with Tom Cruise had been both widely reported but quickly denied. She was replaced by Keri Russell.

In July 2005, Johansson starred with Ewan McGregor in the Michael Bay-directed The Island, making her debut as a female lead in a mainstream action film. She drew attention to both the film and herself when she proposed that she’d wanted to film the sex scene in the film topless, but director Michael Bay disapproved, wanting to keep the film at a PG-13 rating. Though produced with high expectations, when the movie opened to weak reviews and an even weaker box office, the producers of the film accused Johansson of failing to connect with and attract a mainstream audience.

Her film Match Point, directed by Woody Allen, opened in December of 2005. Johansson received her fourth Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, however, the award went to Rachel Weisz, for her role in The Constant Gardener.

Johansson endorsed the Calvin Klein perfume “Moment” and was featured in several commercials and printed advertisements for the product. Further establishing her position in Hollywood, she became the face and spokesperson for the French luxury brand Louis Vuitton in early 2005 and in January 2006 was named the spokesperson of L’Oreal.

In early 2006, Johansson appeared on the controversial cover of the February 2006 issue of Vanity Fair in the nude with other Hollywood it-girl Keira Knightley and world-renowned fashion designer Tom Ford.

In March of 2006, she topped the U.S. edition of FHM’s poll of the sexiest women alive (in the UK edition, Keira Knightley was first with Johansson in third). In May of 2006, Maxim named Johansson #6 in their Hot 100 issue.
